Allergies

Allergies affect nearly 20% of Americans. About a quarter of all Americans are genetically predisposed to allergic reactions to airborne pollen and mold. Many allergies are seasonal and some, such as an allergy toward pollen, are not realized until later in life.

What is an allergy?
An allergy is an exaggerated immune response or reaction to substances that is generally not harmful. An oversensitive immune system can lead to a misdirected immune response to these substances (known as allergens).

Causes
Dust mites, pet dander, mold, pollen and certain foods are some of the most common causes of the uncomfortable and potentially dangerous symptoms of allergies.

Symptoms
Patients experience a varying degree of symptoms. Common symptoms include headache, stuffy or runny nose, coughing, hives, anaphylaxis, contact dermatitis, fatigue, red, itchy, watery eyes and ear discomfort.

Treatments
Your doctor or local allergy specialist can give you an allergy test to determine your specific allergies. Wide ranges of treatments are available. Options include over-the-counter allergy medication, allergy shots and prescription allergy medicine. In your own home, you can reduce dust by using a quality air purifier, covering your mattress with dust mite proof encasings and by keeping your home clean and dust free.
