Breathe California of the Bay Area (BCBA) is a non-profit agency that has been combating lung disease since 1911. Our mission is to fight lung disease in all its forms and to work with our community to promote lung health. As an Emerging Community Leader, you could Earn a $500 Stipend for your involvement in The Community Health Protection Plan that implements the Community Action Model (CAM) which will focus on needs assessment, organizing, and participation. The goal is to recruit interested stakeholders, fill their needs for information and leadership training in culturally and linguistically competent ways, and assist them to identify local air quality issues, gather compelling data, recruit additional stakeholders as participants through community organizing, and design and implement policy actions to improve their environments. This project will help move beyond behavior change and into mobilizing community members and organizations to work for changes that reduce environmental inequalities.

Duties/ responsibilities: 

  • Attend and participate in mandatory workshops and trainings held and facilitated by the Project Coordinator.
  • Work with Community Based Organizations (CBOs), neighborhood associations, community centers, clinics, colleges, and faith-based groups in civic engagement, leadership, public speaking and facilitation, research, and community organizing.
  • Outreach to service locations for community diagnosis and deliver project intention.
  • Conduct assessment tools, collect and analyze data, and educate impacted community residents, participants, and elected officials about findings
  • Develop and decide on team’s plan and activities for each CAM Step.
  • Implement activities to complete each step of the CAM.
  • Promote a policy initiative.
  • Give support to peer community leaders and work in team-oriented environment.

  • Determination – Be committed to the project and tasks (through the good times and bad)

Requirement: Must reside in San Jose, California.

Preferred: Bilingual in Spanish, Vietnamese, or Mandarin.

A Stipend will be awarded.
