“I really liked camp because it taught me a lot about my asthma. At the camp I learned how to breathe better when I run. Now I can run farther without getting tired. Before the camp I would wheeze at night and it was hard to sleep. Now I sleep better.”

Open Air Health Fair at San Jose Flea Market Aimed to Help Individuals Lead Healthier Lives

San Jose, Calif. – The annual Open Air Health Fair returns to the San Jose Flea Market on October 14th and 15th, providing shoppers something much more valuable than they typically receive at the weekend outing. For while the flea market is known for its countless bargains, the health tips available to shoppers may just be the steal of the weekend.

"The Open Air Health Fair offers a great opportunity for local residents to learn more about their personal health," said Margo Sidener, President and CEO of Breathe California, one of the event’s presenting sponsors. "Awareness and prevention are critical to safeguarding your health, which is why it's important for people to take advantage of the screenings and resources offered at the fair."

Hosted by Breathe California and The Health Trust, the Open Air Health Fair provides a variety of free and low-cost health resources to help individuals live longer, healthier and more enjoyable lives. The event, expected to attract close to 50,000 attendees, will feature a number of tests and screenings, including those for high cholesterol, blood pressure, diabetes and stroke risk. Attendees can also receive educational information and participate in demonstrations on a wide range of health topics such as nutrition, fitness, alcohol, smoking cessation, heart health and breast cancer. In addition, health professionals will be on hand to answer questions and offer tips on how each of us can improve our personal health.

“As healthcare costs continue to soar, it is becoming harder for average individuals to remain aware of how to protect themselves from the growing number of threats to their health,” said Cynthia York, Director of Community Wellness at The Health Trust. “Events like these are becoming an even more critical tool in our efforts to ensure that all local residents can lead full and healthy lives.”

The Open Air Health Fair will be held October 14th and 15th from noon to 5 pm. The event will take place at the San Jose Flea Market which is located at 1590 Berryessa Road. Admission is free. Parking costs $6. The Open Air Health Fair is grateful for the generous support of San Jose State University, the Santa Clara Public Health Department, the BiNational Health Week Committee, The California Endowment, Blue Cross, Americorps Vista, Blood Centers of the Pacific, The Health Trust and Breathe California.
