Congratulations to the Recipients of Our
18th Annual Clean Air Awards

On April 18th, Breathe California proudly honored 12 local businesses, organizations and individuals with its 2008 Clean Air Awards. Presented at the agency's annual spring luncheon, the awards recognized the innovative approaches being taken to fight air pollution and protect public health. This year’s awards specifically recognized those who have gone above and beyond in their efforts to address climate change. Click here to read more about our Clean Air Awards and join us in recognizing these true environmental champions!

Help Commemorate World Asthma Day

On May 6th, Breathe California and the Santa Clara County Asthma Coalition will join health advocates around the globe to commemorate World Asthma Day.  In honor of this year’s theme, “You Can Control Asthma,” the groups will be hosting a FREE workshop for families with children suffering from asthma, between 4 pm and 7:30 pm at the Santa Clara Family Health Plan’s Family Resource Center. The event will teach children and parents strategies to better manage the child’s asthma and create a healthier home environment (learn more about this event by reading our Spring PAC Newsletter). In addition, the coalition will be kicking off a host of other community outreach activities throughout the month to raise awareness of the disease. Read more

In addition, REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN for our one-of-a-kind summer Asthma Camp. Click here to learn more and stay tuned for more details!

Breathe California Sponsors AB 2344

Breathe California is proud to announce that it is sponsoring AB 2344, a bill introduced by State Assemblymember Jim Beall to protect funding for vital tobacco control programs. To help the state curb evasion of the tobacco tax, cigarette and tobacco retailers currently pay a one-time licensing fee of $100, which unlike other CA licensing programs includes no annual renewal. As a result, the licensing program faces a funding shortfall, forcing the state to divert more than $7 million from Prop. 99, Prop. 10, the Breast Cancer research fund, and the state’s General Fund.

AB 2344 would establish a $185 annual renewal of the retailers’ license fee, raising enough money to fully fund the licensing program and sending the $7 million shortfall back to the underfunded tobacco prevention and cessation programs. Learn more about Breathe California’s latest legislative effort, including how you can support this common-sense bill
