“I really liked camp because it taught me a lot about my asthma. At the camp I learned how to breathe better when I run. Now I can run farther without getting tired. Before the camp I would wheeze at night and it was hard to sleep. Now I sleep better.”

Breathe California of the Bay Area Supports Research

Read about current Breathe California-funded research projects.

Researchers from universities and research institutions across the San Francisco Bay Area are invited to submit their applications for research support.  Breathe California of the Bay Area is committed to foster the studies of talented local scientists. Applications should detail the planned research activities, their objectives, and references.
They should also include a CV for the researcher and identify the principal investigator for the project.

Research projects that cover any form of lung disease, its prevention, or improving treatments may be submitted.  The agency also invites research projects that address air quality issues.  Projects may fall into several categories: lung diseases of infants and children or adults, acute lung injury or chronic diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lung cancer, lung infections including tuberculosis, or reducing threats such as smoking, air pollution, and occupational lung hazards. The agency may have a preferred category at any given time.

At this time, Breathe California of the Bay Area chooses to focus on clinical and behavioral research, rather than basic research.  It seeks individuals who may make significant contributions in these areas.

Applications to the Research Committee may be submitted anytime before the end of November by mail to the San Jose office, but awards are usually made in December or January.   The process will involve interview(s) by a member of the agency’s research committee and reference checks.   The selected awardee is expected to submit a report of findings at the conclusion of the project, and also to be available to comment on their research to reporters, the agency’s board, and other interested parties.  Awards up to $25,000 will be considered.

Please note that the research award is paid to the researcher’s institution, in the name of the researcher.  Also, it is the policy of Breathe California of the Bay Area NOT to pay indirect expenses.
