“I really liked camp because it taught me a lot about my asthma. At the camp I learned how to breathe better when I run. Now I can run farther without getting tired. Before the camp I would wheeze at night and it was hard to sleep. Now I sleep better.”

Clean Air Advocacy

As part of our efforts to improve lung health, we continually fight for clean air issues locally and state wide as they come up. High levels of particle and ozone pollution pose a serious health risk for all Californians, including those in the Bay Area. Air pollution can lead to the onset of asthma, decreased lung function, heart disease complications and even death.

To combat the impact of air pollution, Breathe California actively advocates for policies which will improve local air quality. These advocacy projects can range from bringing clean vehicle fleets to local governments/businesses to banning high-pollution sources or practices. Most recently, these measures have included pushing for a natural gas refuse fleet in San Jose, fighting for a ban on high-emitting, gas-powered leaf blowers in Palo Alto and advocating for wood-burning restrictions in Gilroy

We also advocate for tougher state and federal air standards as well as promote alternatively fueled vehicles. Tougher air standards are necessary to improve current lung health and to prevent additional lung health problems from developing in the future. By promoting alternatively fueled vehicles, we are adding to our efforts to make our air safer to breathe.
